Be Careful Who You Coffee
I must have a sign on my forehead that says “crazy people welcome”. Why can’t I meet a nice guy once and awhile? Yesterday I thought I’d done just that. I was doing some research at a bookstore and suddenly found myself chatting with the guy next to me. He seemed nice enough and was fairly easy on the eyes, so I agreed to go for coffee with him. The decision made for an interesting afternoon. At the bookstore he was a Time and National Geographic guy, but by the time we’d almost finished our first brew, he was more of a Skeptic and Paranoia guy. It was quite shocking. I wanted to get home but he offered me another drink. I never like to turn down free stuff and it was really good coffee. Also, I was a little curious to learn more of his zany ideas. He launched into this big thing about how internet security is an oxymoron. Apparently, according to him, the government knows everything you’re going to type on your computer, before you type it, some kind of organizational telepathy thing. Don’t ask me to explain it. I might have believed a little more of his ramble if he hadn’t started carrying on about there never being a man on the moon. So, I got my free drink. And I learned a valuable lesson: people in bookstores may not be as sane as they appear. You’ve been warned. Another lesson: a cup of coffee with a harmless, but slightly off-kilter stranger is an interesting way to spend a few hours. I don’t recommend you try this. Take it from someone who knows.
