There is a growing belief conserving energy is necessary in order to save the earth from global warming. I myself am a firm believer in this as well. But no matter where anyone stands on this issue (myself included), conserving energy can help save money. This is especially important in light of the current economic situation that the country is currently facing. Here are some ways that I have learned on how to save energy and money.

I’ve stopped wasting things. Just about everything I buy now can be re-used. I’ve learned that things such as wappers, plastic bottles, and newspapers can all be recycled. It takes less energy to make an aluminum can from recycled material than it does to make one from scratch.

I’ve learned how to drive more efficiently. I now plan out my errands before get into my car. I make a list of all the places that I need to go ahead of time, that way, when I’m out, I’m more likely to get everything done without forgetting to make a stop. I use less gas this way.

I make sure my vehicle is properly maintained. Cars that are not well maintained burn much more fuel. I now have my engine of my car checked regularly as well as my tire pressure. This helps my car use gas more efficiently. I make sure that my brakes are in good condition because I know that faulty brakes are more likely to wear out. Furthermore, bad breaks put extra strain on the engine. If the engine has to work harder, my car will have to use more gas. I also maintain a steady speed while driving. I’ve learned that driving fast also increases gas consumption.

I make sure my home is properly insulated for conserving energy and my windows are properly sealed. If not, I realize I may have higher energy costs due to air seeping out. My thermostat is programmable and I lower the temperature of the heat at night, when I don’t need as much warmth, or during the day when I won’t be home.
